WHAT IS A CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT TRAINER
(CPDT)?

Educational Testing Service (ETS) developed the Certified Professional Development Trainer program to help define and establish professional standards throughout the training industry.  The CPDT certificate is a cross-industry, portable credential that provides recognition that a trainer has attained a standard of excellence in the training industry.

It measures an individual's mastery of instructional design and training delivery as defined by the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Instruction (IBSTPI).

What Are the Criteria?
To earn the CPDT designation, the facilitator must pass both a computer-based test that assesses their training and design knowledge and a live performance assessment in which they demonstrate the skills described in the Standards.

What Competencies Are Tested?

  • Analyzing course materials and learner information

  • Preparing the learning environment
  • Establishing and maintaining instructor credibility
  • Demonstrating effective communication skills
  • Demonstrating effective presentation skills
  • Demonstrating effective questioning techniques
  • Responding appropriately to learners' needs for clarification and feedback
  • Providing positive reinforcement and motivational incentives
  • Using a variety of instructional methods appropriately
  • Using audio visuals effectively
  • Evaluating learner performance
  • Evaluating delivery of instruction
  • Reporting evaluation information
Why Should You Hire a CPDT?
If your group needs training, you want training that will stick.  With a CPDT, you know you are getting a professional who understands adult learning techniques and stays up to date on the most current information and business strategies.  A CPDT has been in the performance improvement field for many years, and has a proven track record.  You can count on them to analyze your goals and participants and provide the right information, at the right time, in the right delivery method to get the results you want.
